The Power of Children’s Praises

In Matthew 21:15-16, we see the chief priests and scribes upset as children cry out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” But Jesus responds by pointing to scripture, “Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise.” This moment highlights both the incredible capacity children have for deep worship and the tendency of adults to underestimate their spiritual potential.

The word "children" in this passage refers to those under strict training, an intentional upbringing to be worshippers of God. Children, in their purity and sincerity, can release emotional cries of worship that, though inarticulate, reflect a deep, spiritual connection. Their cries mirror what Romans 8:26-27 tells us—that the Spirit intercedes when we don't know what to pray. This truth extends to children as well.

I was struck by the description of “mouth” in this verse, which is also translated as "the point of a sword." Children’s mouths can be as sharp and powerful as a double-edged sword (Psalm 8:2, Proverbs 18:21). Their words can carry immense spiritual authority.. Psalm 127:4 reminds us that children are like arrows in the hands of warriors, and blessed is the one who raises them!

To parents, grandparents, teachers, church leaders, and all who influence children—take heart. God has given us His Word as a strategy to raise up worshippers. Let’s intentionally raise children in the ways of the Lord, cultivating a community of prayer, worship, and praise in every home. Together, we can raise an army of spiritual champions who worship in spirit and in truth! (John 4:23)

Action Step: Seek God’s guidance as you nurture the faith of children in your care. Guide them to use their voices as instruments of praise and prayer, echoing the heart of the Father, and declaring His Word like a weapon in their mouths. Together, let’s build altars of worship in our homes, communities, and churches.

In Jesus' name, amen!
